Mechanically interlocked molecules (MIMs) including famous catenanes show switchable physical properties and attract continuous research interest due to their potential application in molecular devices. The advantages of using spin crossover (SCO) materials here are enormous, allowing for control through diverse stimuli and highly specific functions, and enabling the transfer of the internal dynamics of MIMs from solution to solid state, leading to macroscopic applications. Herein, we report the efficient self-assembly of catenated metal-organic frameworks (termed catena-MOFs) induced by stacking interactions, through the combination of rationally selected flexible and conjugated naphthalene diimide-based bis-pyridyl ligand (BPND), [MI(CN)2]- (M = Ag or Au) and Fe2+ in a one-step strategy. The obtained bimetallic Hofmann-type SCO-MOFs [FeII(BPND){Ag(CN)2}2]·3CHCl3 (1Ag) and [FeII(BPND{Au(CN)2}2]·2CHCl3·2H2O (1Au) possess a unique three-dimensional (3D) catena-MOF constructed from the polycatenation of two-dimensional (2D) layers with hxl topology. Both complexes undergo thermal- and light-induced SCO. Significantly, abnormal increases in the maximum emission intensity and dielectric constant can be detected simultaneously with the switching of spin states. This research opens up SCO-actuated bistable MIMs that afford dual functionality of coupled fluorescence emission and dielectricity.

Anaerobic digestion (AD) is a promising technique for waste management, which can achieve sludge stabilization and energy recovery. This study successfully prepared Fe3O4@ceramsite from WAS and applied it as an additive in sludge digestion, aiming to improve the conversion of organics to biomethane efficiency. Results showed that after adding the Fe3O4@ceramsite, the methane production was enhanced by 34.7% compared with the control group (88.0 ± 0.1 mL/g VS). Further mechanisms investigation revealed that Fe3O4@ceramsite enhanced digesta stability by strong buffering capacity, improved sludge conductivity, and promoted Fe (III) reduction. Moreover, Fe3O4@ceramsite has a larger surface area and better porous structure, which also facilitated AD performance. Microbial community analysis showed that some functional anaerobes related to AD such as Spirochaeta and Smithella were enriched with Fe3O4@ceramsite treatment. Potential syntrophic metabolisms between syntrophic bacteria (Syntrophomonas, associated with DIET) and methanogens were also detected in the Fe3O4@ceramsite treatment AD system.

BACKGROUND: Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), which often presents with bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), is among the most common morbidities affecting extremely premature infants and is a leading cause of severe vision impairment in children worldwide. Activations of the inflammasome cascade and microglia have been implicated in playing a role in the development of both ROP and BPD. Apoptosis-associated speck-like protein containing a caspase recruitment domain (ASC) is pivotal in inflammasome assembly. Utilizing mouse models of both oxygen-induced retinopathy (OIR) and BPD, this study was designed to test the hypothesis that hyperoxia induces ASC speck formation, which leads to microglial activation and retinopathy, and that inhibition of ASC speck formation by a humanized monoclonal antibody, IC100, directed against ASC, will ameliorate microglial activation and abnormal retinal vascular formation. METHODS: We first tested ASC speck formation in the retina of ASC-citrine reporter mice expressing ASC fusion protein with a C-terminal citrine (fluorescent GFP isoform) using a BPD model that causes both lung and eye injury by exposing newborn mice to room air (RA) or 85% O2 from postnatal day (P) 1 to P14. The retinas were dissected on P14 and retinal flat mounts were used to detect vascular endothelium with AF-594-conjugated isolectin B4 (IB4) and citrine-tagged ASC specks. To assess the effects of IC100 on an OIR model, newborn ASC citrine reporter mice and wildtype mice (C57BL/6 J) were exposed to RA from P1 to P6, then 75% O2 from P7 to P11, and then to RA from P12 to P18. At P12 mice were randomized to the following groups: RA with placebo PBS (RA-PBS), O2 with PBS (O2-PBS), O2 + IC100 intravitreal injection (O2-IC100-IVT), and O2 + IC100 intraperitoneal injection (O2-IC100-IP). Retinal vascularization was evaluated by flat mount staining with IB4. Microglial activation was detected by immunofluorescence staining for allograft inflammatory factor 1 (AIF-1) and CD206. Retinal structure was analyzed on H&E-stained sections, and function was analyzed by pattern electroretinography (PERG). RNA-sequencing (RNA-seq) of the retinas was performed to determine the transcriptional effects of IC100 treatment in OIR. RESULTS: ASC specks were significantly increased in the retinas by hyperoxia exposure and colocalized with the abnormal vasculature in both BPD and OIR models, and this was associated with increased microglial activation. Treatment with IC100-IVT or IC100-IP significantly reduced vaso-obliteration and intravitreal neovascularization. IC100-IVT treatment also reduced retinal microglial activation, restored retinal structure, and improved retinal function. RNA-seq showed that IC100 treatment corrected the induction of genes associated with angiogenesis, leukocyte migration, and VEGF signaling caused by O2. IC100 also corrected the suppression of genes associated with cell junction assembly, neuron projection, and neuron recognition caused by O2. CONCLUSION: These data demonstrate the crucial role of ASC in the pathogenesis of OIR and the efficacy of a humanized therapeutic anti-ASC antibody in treating OIR mice. Thus, this anti-ASC antibody may potentially be considered in diseases associated with oxygen stresses and retinopathy, such as ROP.

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a critical complication known for their extremely high mortality rate and lack of effective clinical therapy. Disorders in mitochondrial dynamics possess a pivotal role in the occurrence and progression of contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN) by activating NLRP3 inflammasome. The activation of dynamin-related protein-1 (Drp1) can trigger mitochondrial dynamic disorders by regulating excessive mitochondrial fission. However, the precise role of Drp1 during CIN has not been clarified. In vivo experiments revealed that inhibiting Drp1 through Mdivi-1 (one selective inhibitor of Drp1) can significantly decrease the expression of p-Drp1 (Ser616), mitochondrial p-Drp1 (Ser616), mitochondrial Bax, mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (mROS), NLRP3, caspase-1, ASC, TNF-α, IL-1ß, interleukin (IL)-18, IL-6, creatinine (Cr), malondialdehyde (MDA), blood urea nitrogen (BUN), and KIM-1. Moreover, Mdivi-1 reduced kidney pathological injury and downregulated the interaction between NLRP3 and thioredoxin-interacting protein (TXNIP), which was accompanied by decreased interactions between TRX and TXNIP. This resulted in increasing superoxide dismutase (SOD) and CAT activity, TRX expression, up-regulating mitochondrial membrane potential, and augmenting ATP contents and p-Drp1 (Ser616) levels in the cytoplasm. However, it did not bring impact on the expression of p-Drp1 (Ser637) and TXNIP. Activating Drp-1though Acetaldehyde abrogated the effects of Mdivi-1. In addition, the results of in vitro studies employing siRNA-Drp1 and plasmid-Drp1 intervention in HK-2 cells treated with iohexol were consistent with the in vivo experiments. Our findings revealed inhibiting Drp1 phosphorylation at Ser616 could ameliorate iohexol -induced acute kidney injury though alleviating the activation of the TXNIP-NLRP3 inflammasome pathway.

BACKGROUND: An accessory extreme far anteromedial portal can improve visualisation and ease inferior leaf meniscectomy in patients with lateral meniscal anterior horn horizontal tears. However, the therapeutic outcomes of adding an accessory extreme far anteromedial portal remain unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical efficacy of adding an accessory extreme far anteromedial portal for treating lateral meniscal horizontal tears involving the anterior horns. METHODS: This retrospective study included 101 patients with anterior horn involvement in lateral meniscal horizontal tears who underwent arthroscopic unstable inferior leaf meniscectomy between January 2016 and December 2020. The pathologies were diagnosed using physical examinations and magnetic resonance imaging. The anterior horn involved in the lateral meniscal horizontal tears was treated using inferior leaf meniscectomy. The primary endpoints were changes in the visual analogue scale, Lysholm, International Knee Documentation Committee, and Tegner scores at the final follow-up. The secondary endpoint was meniscal cure rate at 3 months postoperatively. The preoperative and postoperative functional scores were compared. The occurrence of complications was recorded. RESULTS: All patients were followed up for an average of 4.9 ± 1.2 years (range 2.3-7.5 years). After 4 months, none of the patients experienced pain, weakness, instability, or tenderness in the lateral joint line, achieving an imaging cure rate of 98%. At the final follow-up, significant postoperative improvements were observed in the average values of the visual analogue scale score (3.5 ± 0.7 vs. 0.7 ± 0.6), Lysholm score (62.7 ± 4.4 vs. 91.8 ± 3.1), International Knee Documentation Committee score (61.9 ± 3.7 vs. 91.7 ± 9.5), and Tegner score (2.0 ± 0.7 vs. 6.1 ± 0.7). Excellent Lysholm scores were obtained in 81 patients, and good outcomes were obtained in 18 patients, with an excellent-to-good rate of 98.0%. CONCLUSIONS: Inferior leaf resection via the accessory far anteromedial portal is a safe treatment option for the involved anterior horn in lateral meniscal horizontal tears. This approach enhances visibility and facilitates surgical procedures, with minimal complications.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common sustained cardiac arrhythmia, significantly impacting patients' quality of life and increasing the risk of death, stroke, heart failure, and dementia. Over the past two decades, there have been significant breakthroughs in AF risk prediction and screening, stroke prevention, rhythm control, catheter ablation, and integrated management. During this period, the scale, quality, and experience of AF management in China have greatly improved, providing a solid foundation for the development of guidelines for the diagnosis and management of AF. To further promote standardized AF management, and apply new technologies and concepts to clinical practice in a timely and comprehensive manner, the Chinese Society of Cardiology of the Chinese Medical Association and the Heart Rhythm Committee of the Chinese Society of Biomedical Engineering have jointly developed the Chinese Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Management of Atrial Fibrillation. The guidelines have comprehensively elaborated on various aspects of AF management and proposed the CHA2DS2-VASc-60 stroke risk score based on the characteristics of AF in the Asian population. The guidelines have also reevaluated the clinical application of AF screening, emphasized the significance of early rhythm control, and highlighted the central role of catheter ablation in rhythm control.

OBJECTIVE: Anxiety is a prevalent comorbidity in lung cancer (LC) patients associated with a decline in quality of life. Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), a neuroactive steroid, levels rise in response to stress. Prior research on the association between DHEA and anxiety has yielded contradictory results and no study has investigated this association in LC patients. METHODS: A total of 213 patients with LC were recruited from a general hospital. Data on demographic and cancer-related variables were collected. Using the Chinese version of the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), the degree of anxiety was determined. Cortisol, DHEA, and Dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEA-S) levels in saliva were measured. Adjusting for confounding variables, a multivariate regression analysis was conducted. RESULTS: 147 men and 66 women comprised our group with an average age of 63.75 years. After accounting for demographic and treatment-related factors, anxiety levels were significantly correlated with, post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSSs) (ß = 0.332, p < 0.001) and fatigue (ß = 0.247, p = 0.02). Association between anxiety and three factors, including DHEA, PTSSs, and fatigue, was observed in patients with advanced cancer stages (III and IV) (DHEA ß = 0.319, p = 0.004; PTSS ß = 0.396, p = 0.001; fatigue ß = 0.289, p = 0.027) and those undergoing chemotherapy (DHEA ß = 0.346, p = 0.001; PTSS ß = 0.407, p = 0.001; fatigue ß = 0.326, p = 0.011). CONCLUSIONS: The association between anxiety and DHEA remained positive in advanced cancer stages and chemotherapy patients. Further study is necessary to determine whether DHEA is a potential biomarker of anxiety in LC patients.

BACKGROUND: Vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) are commonly used as seed cells in tissue-engineered vascular constructions. However, their variable phenotypes and difficult to control functions pose challenges. This study aimed to overcome these obstacles using a three-dimensional culture system. METHODS: Calf VSMCs were administered tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) before culturing in two- and three-dimensional well plates and polyglycolic acid (PGA) scaffolds, respectively. The phenotypic markers of VSMCs were detected by immunofluorescence staining and western blotting, and the proliferation and migration abilities of VSMCs were detected by CCK-8, EDU, cell counting, scratch, and Transwell assays. RESULTS: TNF-α rapidly decreased the contractile phenotypic markers and elevated the synthetic phenotypic markers of VSMCs, as well as markedly increasing the proliferation and migration ability of VSMCs under two- and three-dimensional culture conditions. CONCLUSIONS: TNF-α can rapidly induce a phenotypic shift in VSMCs and change their viability on PGA scaffolds.

BACKGROUND: Traditional total hip arthroplasty (THA) using the direct anterior approach (DAA) requires a hip extension. This study aimed to compare the clinical outcomes of patients undergoing THA with DAA using either the no hip extension (NHE) or the traditional hip extension (THE) strategy. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of demographics, clinical and radiological outcomes, and occurrence of complications was performed using data from 123 patients treated between January 2020 and November 2021. The patients were categorised into two groups: NHE (84 patients) and THE (39 patients). RESULTS: The NHE group exhibited shorter operative time and had more male participants with higher ages. Comparable outcomes were observed in the visual analogue scale, Harris Hip, and Oxford Hip scores at the final follow-up. Furthermore, complications were observed in the NHE and THE groups, including two and one greater trochanteric fractures and three and one transfusions, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Compared to the THE, employing the NHE strategy during THA with DAA in elderly and young female patients resulted in comparable clinical outcomes with several advantages, such as favourable surgical time. The NHE method also exhibited good safety and effectiveness. Therefore, the NHE strategy may be a favourable option for elderly and young female patients.

BACKGROUND: Various postoperative staging systems were developed to assess the outcome of differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) from initial risk after surgery to dynamic changing prognosis during follow-up. The objective of our retrospective cohort study was to identify risk factors contributing to macroscopic positive surgical margin (R2 resection) and parameters in discriminating the treatment responses and prognosis among R2 patients. METHODS: In total, 242 DTC patients with extrathyroidal extension who underwent a thyroidectomy at Kaohsiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital between January 2013 and July 2018, were included. The patients were grouped according to the presence or absence of gross residual disease (R2). The R2 patients were further classified into two categories according to their treatment response into excellent and non-excellent groups. The parameters and treatment outcomes were compared between these groups. RESULTS: The mean follow-up time was 45.3 months. 207 (85.5%) patients had either surgery-free or microscopic margins (R0/R1), while 35 (14.5%) had R2 resection. In the R2 group (n = 35), 15 (42.9%) patients achieved an excellent response, while 20 (57.1%) achieved a non-excellent response. Statistically significant differences were observed in the extent of neck dissection, TSH-Tg level, post-RAI Tg level, nodal status, and recurrence between the two groups. The Kaplan-Meier curves for 5-year local and distant recurrence-free survival (LRFS and DRFS) of R0/R1 vs. R2 patients were 90.0% vs. 66.3%, and 98.4% vs.90.7% respectively, (p <0.001). Among the R2 patients, the excellent responders had a higher LRFS than non-excellent responders (93.3% vs. 45.1%, p=0.008). CONCLUSION: There are significant disparities in RFS among R2 patients with different treatment responses. The nodal status of PTC and thyroglobulin level after thyroidectomy and RAI were factors contributing to difference in their treatment responses.

Polar compounds with switchable polarization properties are applicable in various devices such as ferroelectric memory and pyroelectric sensors. However, a strategy to prepare polar compounds has not been established. We report a rational synthesis of a polar CoGa crystal using chiral cth ligands (SS-cth and RR-cth, cth = 5,7,7,12,14,14-hexamethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane). Both the original homo metal Co crystal and Ga crystal exhibit a centrosymmetric isostructure, where the dipole moment of metal complexes with the SS-cth ligand and those with the RR-cth ligand are canceled out. To obtain a polar compound, the Co valence tautomeric complex with SS-cth in the homo metal Co crystal is replaced with the Ga complex with SS-cth by mixing Co valence tautomeric complexes with RR-cth and Ga complexes with SS-cth. The CoGa crystal exhibits polarization switching between the pseudononpolar state at a low temperature and the polar state at a high temperature because only Co complexes exhibit changes in electric dipole moment due to metal-to-ligand charge transfer. Following the same strategy, the polarization-switchable CoZn complex was synthesized. The CoZn crystal exhibits polarization switching between the polar state at a low temperature and the pseudononpolar state at a high temperature, which is the opposite temperature dependence to that of the CoGa crystal. These results revealed that the polar crystal can be synthesized by design, using a chiral ligand. Moreover, our method allows for the control of temperature-dependent polarization changes, which contrasts with typical ferroelectric compounds, in which the polar ferroelectric phase typically occurs at low temperatures.

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate whether the onset of the plateau phase of slow hepatitis B surface antigen decline in patients with chronic hepatitis B treated with intermittent interferon therapy is related to the frequency of dendritic cell subsets and expression of the costimulatory molecules CD40, CD80, CD83, and CD86. Method: This was a cross-sectional study in which patients were divided into a natural history group (namely NH group), a long-term oral nucleoside analogs treatment group (namely NA group), and a plateau-arriving group (namely P group). The percentage of plasmacytoid dendritic cell and myeloid dendritic cell subsets in peripheral blood lymphocytes and monocytes and the mean fluorescence intensity of their surface costimulatory molecules were detected using a flow cytometer. Results: In total, 143 patients were enrolled (NH group, n = 49; NA group, n = 47; P group, n = 47). The results demonstrated that CD141/CD1c double negative myeloid dendritic cell (DNmDC)/lymphocytes and monocytes (%) in P group (0.041 [0.024, 0.069]) was significantly lower than that in NH group (0.270 [0.135, 0.407]) and NA group (0.273 [0.150, 0.443]), and CD86 mean fluorescence intensity of DNmDCs in P group (1832.0 [1484.0, 2793.0]) was significantly lower than that in NH group (4316.0 [2958.0, 5169.0]) and NA group (3299.0 [2534.0, 4371.0]), Adjusted P all < 0.001. Conclusion: Reduced DNmDCs and impaired maturation may be associated with the onset of the plateau phase during intermittent interferon therapy in patients with chronic hepatitis B.

The decline in albumen quality resulting from aging hens poses a threat to the financial benefits of the egg industry. Exploring the underlying mechanisms from the perspective of cell molecules of albumen formation is significant for the efficient regulation of albumen quality. Two individual groups of Hy-Line Brown layers with ages of 40 (W40) and 100 (W100) wk old were used in the present study. Each group contained over 2,000 birds. This study assessed the egg quality, biochemical indicators and physiological status of hens between W40 and W100. Subsequently, a quantitative proteomic analysis was conducted to identify differences in protein abundance in magnum tissues between W40 and W100. In the W40 group, significant increases (P < 0.05) were notable for albumen quality (thick albumen solid content, albumen height, Haugh unit), serum indices (calcium, estrogen, and progesterone levels), magnum histomorphology (myosin light-chain kinase content, secretory capacity, mucosal fold, goblet cell count and proportion) as well as the total antioxidant capacity of the liver. However, the luminal diameter of the magnum, albumen gel properties and random coil of the albumen were increased (P < 0.05) in the W100 group. The activity of glutathione, superoxidase dismutase, and malondialdehyde in the liver, magnum, and serum did not vary (P > 0.05) among the groups. Proteomic analysis revealed the identification of 118 differentially expressed proteins between the groups, which comprised proteins associated with protein secretion, DNA damage and repair, cell proliferation, growth, antioxidants, and apoptosis. Furthermore, Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes pathway analysis revealed that BRCA2 and FBN1 were significantly downregulated in Fanconi anemia (FA) and TGF-ß signaling pathways in W100, validated through quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR). In conclusion, significant age-related variations in albumen quality, and magnum morphology are regulated by proteins involved in antioxidant capacity.

An increased neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) is a poor prognostic biomarker in various types of cancer, because it reflects the inhibition of lymphocytes in the circulation and tumors. In urologic cancers, upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC) is known for its aggressive features and lack of T cell infiltration; however, the association between neutrophils and suppressed T lymphocytes in UTUC is largely unknown. In this study, we examined the relationship between UTUC-derived factors and tumor-associated neutrophils or T lymphocytes. The culture supernatant from UTUC tumor tissue modulated neutrophils to inhibit T cell proliferation. Among the dominant factors secreted by UTUC tumor tissue, apolipoprotein A1 (Apo-A1) exhibited a positive correlation with NLR. Moreover, tumor-infiltrating neutrophils were inversely correlated with tumor-infiltrating T cells. Elevated Apo-A1 levels in UTUC were also inversely associated with the population of tumor-infiltrating T cells. Our findings indicate that elevated Apo-A1 expression in UTUC correlates with tumor-associated neutrophils and T cells. This suggests a potential immunomodulatory effect on neutrophils and T cells within the tumor microenvironment, which may represent therapeutic targets for UTUC treatment.

The metabolic disorders caused by diabetes can lead to various complications, including male spermatogenesis dysfunction. Exploring effective therapeutics that attenuate diabetes mellitus (DM)-induced male subfertility is of great importance. Pharmaceuticals targeting PPARα activation such as bezafibrate have been regarded as an important strategy for patients with diabetes. In this study, we use streptozocin (STZ) injection to establish a type 1 DM mice model and use bezafibrate to treat DM mice and evaluate the effects of bezafibrate on the spermatogenic function of the DM male mice. Bezafibrate treatment exhibited protective effects on DM-induced spermatogenesis deficiency, as reflected by increased testis weight, improved histological morphology of testis, elevated sperm parameters, increased serum testosterone concentration as well as increased mRNA levels of steroidogenesis enzymes. Meanwhile, testicular cell apoptosis, inflammation accumulation and oxidative stress status were also shown to be alleviated by bezafibrate compared with the DM group. In vivo and in vitro studies, PPARα specific inhibitor and PPARα knockout mice were further used to investigate the role of PPARα in the protective effects of bezafibrate on DM-induced spermatogenesis dysfunction. Our results indicated that the protection of bezafibrate on DM-induced spermatogenesis deficiency was abrogated by PPARα inhibition or deletion. Our study suggested that bezafibrate administration could ameliorate DM-induced spermatogenesis dysfunction and may represent a novel practical strategy for male infertility.

INTRODUCTION: Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is a common complication that affects an increasing number of cancer survivors. However, the current treatment options for CIPN are limited. Paclitaxel (PTX) is a widely used chemotherapeutic drug that induces senescence in cancer cells. While previous studies have demonstrated that Sonic hedgehog (Shh) can counteract cellular dysfunction during aging, its role in CIPN remains unknown. OBJECTIVES: Herein, the aim of this study was to investigate whether Shh activation could inhibits neuronal/glial senescence and alleviates CIPN. METHODS: We treated ND7/23 neuronal cells and RSC96 Schwann cells with two selective Shh activators (purmorphamine [PUR] and smoothened agonist [SAG]) in the presence of PTX. Additionally, we utilized a CIPN mouse model induced by PTX injection. To assess cellular senescence, we performed a senescence-associated ß-galactosidase (SA-ß-gal) assay, measured reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels, and examined the expression of P16, P21, and γH2AX. To understand the underlying mechanisms, we conducted ubiquitin assays, LC-MS/MS, H&E staining, and assessed protein expression through Western blotting and immunofluorescence staining. RESULTS: In vitro, we observed that Shh activation significantly alleviated the senescence-related decline in multiple functions included SA-ß-gal activity, expression of P16 and P21, cell viability, and ROS accumulation in DRG sensory neurons and Schwann cells after PTX exposure. Furthermore, our in vivo experiments demonstrated that Shh activation significantly reduced axonal degeneration, demyelination, and improved nerve conduction. Mechanistically, we discovered that PTX reduced the protein level of SP1, which was ubiquitinated by the E3 ligase TRIM25 at the lysine 694 (K694), leading to increased CXCL13 expression, and we found that Shh activation inhibited PTX-induced neuronal/glial senescence and CIPN through the TRIM25-SP1-CXCL13 axis. CONCLUSION: These findings provide evidence for the role of PTX-induced senescence in DRG sensory neurons and Schwann cells, suggesting that Shh could be a potential therapeutic target for CIPN.

ITA and Beast methods were used to quantitatively analyze the nonlinear process of a PM2.5 concentration time series based on the PM2.5 concentration data of the three major urban agglomerations in China. The results showed that: ① the degree of the PM2.5 pollution in the three major urban agglomerations had decreased, and the high-concentration areas had noticeably shrunk. The degree of spatial polarization of PM2.5 concentration was reduced, and the spatial difference was narrowed. The PM2.5 concentration in most areas showed downward trends, but the degree of change was not the same. Compared with the YRD and PRD, the concentration of PM2.5 in the BTH was still at a relatively high level. ② The concentration of PM2.5 in the three major urban agglomerations had seasonal variation characteristics that were high in winter and spring and low in summer and autumn. There were obvious differences in PM2.5 concentration between winter and summer, and the convergence of PM2.5 concentration in summer was greater than that in winter. Areas with high PM2.5 concentration also had obvious downward trends, but the downward trends of PM2.5 concentration in the PRD were not obvious compared with those in the YRD and BTH. ③ The PM2.5 concentration time series of the three major urban agglomerations all had significant downward trends: Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH) > the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) > the Pearl River Delta (PRD).
